To the Viewer: The Drawings Catalogue is organized by decade. Within each decade, drawings are alphabetized by the first letter of the first word in the title, excluding "The." When a drawing is of one person, the drawing
is listed by the first letter of the person's first name; drawings with two or more people are generally listed by title.
"Artist Board" sizes are cited height by width, and are approximate.
About half of the drawings were commissioned by, and published in, The New York Times. Other drawings may have appeared in The New Yorker, Playbill, Rolling Stone, and many others. More publications in which Hirschfelds regularly appear are cited in Hirschfeld's biography, which you can find by clicking on the Biography Icon in the upper-left-hand corner of your screen. Drawings have also been commissioned as cover art for record albums, notably BMG Classics.
At first, we began citing each published source, but the captions became very lengthy - and this site is about Hirschfeld's images. Rather than lines of captions, we preferred Hirschfeld's lines. The publishers, publication dates, and other facts, are available by contacting the Gallery. We are the archivists of Hirschfeld's work as well as his Gallery, and as such will provide that information. Now, go look!
